Why ArtRanks exists

Palestinian art.
Open connections.

A public starting point for discovering Palestinian visual artists, their work, and the sources that connect their stories.

From Palestine.
Across the diaspora.

ArtRanks is a free index dedicated to Palestinian visual art and artists. You can browse profiles, explore linked artwork records, and follow their sources without an account or a subscription.

The project includes artists in Palestine and throughout the worldwide diaspora, living and deceased. Its ambition is to connect their practices, works, collections, and exhibition histories through reliable public information.

Open access

Exploring the directory is free. The project is being developed around funding that keeps access open to artists and the public.

Visible sources

Artist inclusion is supported by explicit public sources. Collection records retain attribution, original credits, and links to their context.

Across the diaspora

Palestinian artists may live and work anywhere. The index’s scope follows documented identity and visual-art practice across borders and generations.

Public inclusion policy

A clear basis
for inclusion.

The index includes Palestinian visual artists, living and deceased, in Palestine and across the worldwide diaspora. It covers visual-art practices such as painting, sculpture, photography, installation, printmaking, moving image, and related work.

A profile is published after review of reliable public sources that explicitly identify the artist as Palestinian and document a visual-art practice. Public self-identification, official artist biographies, and well-attributed institutional, archival, or scholarly biographies can support that review.

Birthplace, residence, a family name, or a passport alone does not establish inclusion. Collection nationality fields are shown only as attributed source context.

Published profiles link to the source supporting their inclusion. Records awaiting review remain unpublished. An artist’s absence reflects the current limits of our sources and review, rather than a conclusion about their identity or practice.

The first chapter

A focused start.
Room to grow.

ArtRanks combines selected records from The Museum of Modern Art’s open metadata with original artist profiles informed by official artist websites and institutional biographies. Inclusion is independent of representation in any one museum collection.

Coverage remains limited. The index does not include all Palestinian artists, every work they have made, or the full breadth of Palestinian art. Additional sources and documented reviews will expand it.

Record counts describe what is currently indexed. They do not measure artistic quality, influence, or market value. ArtRanks does not currently assign artist rankings.

Collection descriptions and creator credits are retained with attribution. Original ArtRanks biographies link to their references; source texts and images retain their rights. Collaborative works keep their original credits, including creators whose profiles are outside the scope of this index.
